Welcome to week 6 of the Spring 2022 One Room Challenge (The Bookshelves & design changes). Week 4 & 5 of our challenge pretty much didn’t exist..ha! My husband was out of town on a work trip, and he’s my carpenter. I knew this going into the challenge, but I also knew we could still complete the room on time. We kicked it into whitener style this weekend and got so much done! There is still a lot to do, but it’s starting to feel like the room we envisioned.
You can get caught up on the process below.
What is the ORC?
The One Room Challenge is a widely anticipated biannual event. It was started by Linda Weinstein of Calling It Home, and the media sponsor is @apartmenttherapy. Each round, 20 featured designers will transform a space and document the process while sharing their sources and advice. Many guest participants will join the fun and also transform a room in 8 weeks. This challenge has interior design inspiration, ideas, and so much encouragement.

Let’s talk about the Ikea Billy Bookcase hack that many people have done. This is the most clever and money-saving hack you can use to get a custom built-in look. I used this same hack in our media/library room that we built a few winters ago. You can read all about this room here.

It’s getting there! With each layer it keeps getting better!
Bookshelves & Design Changes
We decided to use this same hack in Joe’s study. We planned to have open shelving and build arches up top to add a neat Architectural element to the room. With a time crunch and needing to hide the not so pretty items, we opted for doors and a more simple top.
By doing this, we could also use material we already had on hand, which saved lots of money. A big plus!
I will do a blog post later on exactly how we built these bookcases, but until then, here are a few pics of the process.
We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but we got this! Today, I am painting the bookcase Urbane Bronze by Sherwin Williams, and this weekend, we will be adding the faux brick and picture frame molding! I can’t wait to see this all completed!
Thanks for stopping by, and be sure to check back next week! I can hardly wait! You can also follow other One Room Challenge designers as they make over rooms in their homes. There are so many inspiring spaces!
