I love hosting guests, and my goal is to make sure they feel at home. I want their stay to be comfortable, relaxing, and peaceful. I feel that a spare bedroom is a retreat for them and should be an inviting space for the time they are at my home.
I thought it would be fun to compile a list of some of my favorites things I do to get my spare room guest ready.
My Top Ten List on how to make a spare bedroom a “guest retreat.”
1. Create a great nights’ sleep with beautiful bed linens, a variety of pillows to accommodate anyone’s preference and multiple blanket choices. I also love to layer every bed with a soft down comforter. I want to make sure that the sleepy travelers get a good nights’ rest.

2. Stock your bedside table with books and magazines. Some of your guests may enjoy reading to wind down after a long day. Always leave the wifi code on a note for reference.
3. Even though many people use their cell phones these days, I always like a quiet clock in the room for my guests.
4. Fresh flowers provide an instant welcome to any space. Keep the arrangement simple, and it will make a lovely statement.
5. A dish or bowl for jewelry is useful and decorative on a side table.
6. Everyone forgets to pack at least one thing when traveling and a basket full of goodies is great, so they don’t rush out and buy forgotten items. A few ideas for a basket are robe and slippers, lotion, razor and shaving cream, soap, shampoo, mouthwash, toothbrush and toothpaste, and of course chocolates…

7. Bedside lighting is a must for those night time readers.
8. A chair for relaxing with a pillow and a throw is a perfect spot for a guest to enjoy some quiet time.
9. Add a mirror for guests to check out their outfit or touch up makeup.
10. I like to leave a space in the closet cleaned out with a supply of hangars so they can unpack as soon as they arrive.

Because we live so far away from a lot of our friends and family, a visit is something special. I love playing host and look forward to spoiling our guests. My goal is that they leave feeling more relaxed than they did before they arrived. I just hope they like dogs [or at least our dog]!!:)
