Would you like to visit a place with stunning mountain scenery, outdoor adventure, and a little-haunted history?
A Haunting Destination
I had recently read in a news report about a ghost sighting at the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park, CO. This hotel provided the inspiration for Stephen King’s book, The Shining. Realizing I was only a few hours away from this place, I was excited to go; so that’s just what we did. This quaint little town was a perfect start to our summer day trips.
Estes Park is adjacent to Rocky Mountain National Park and Roosevelt National Forest which provided beautiful scenery as we entered the town. The streets were bustling with people enjoying their surroundings. While we did not find any boutiques, the town had plenty to offer with knick-knack stores and restaurants; lunch being our first priority. We made it a family trip so we were juggling our girls and our dog which always makes things more interesting, especially as our girls spotted a cute candy shop and were more than happy to try some samples.
On to the Stanley…
The Stanley Hotel was opened in 1907 by Freelan and Flora Stanley, and are believed to be going about their business of running their hotel as if they were still alive. Children are heard running and giggling on the 4th floor and Room 217 is known to be the hotspot of paranormal activity. Just walking up to this hotel I found myself looking at each window to see if someone was looking back. The hotel is open for overnight guests, and they provide ghost tours and have a palm reader on site. The entryway is nothing less than I would expect after watching the movie, The Shining; there is a definite creepy vibe as soon as you walk in the front door. It was such a fun place to visit and makes me want to watch the classic movie again.
I’m looking forward to taking you along on some of our future summer trips!
XOXO,
Kristen
